Airfix Porsche Gulf 917
From the outset I decided to use as much of the kit as possible utilising the Airfix chassis where possible.
The floor pan was cut just in front of the rear section being cut into the body shell. The floor pan was then drilled and mounted on a nylon block to allow milling and drilling of the cut outs and screw fixings. An alloy base was then made to fit on the floor pan.
Wheel bearings were made out of brass 12x6mm, they were drilled and reamed for the axles and fixed with screws to alloy base.
I made the motor harness out of nylon, with 3mm dowels to locate it in the harness. This harness was then drilled, tapped and mounted on the alloy base. A nylon bush was needed for the guide mount, which was made a press fit through the plastic floor pan and alloy plate.
Probably the biggest problem was the fixing between the top body and the floor pan. Two nylon pillars were used. These were glued and screwed to the body, and screws from the base to hold it all together.
The front part of the car was also located in a position by slotting the webbing in the front nose of the body shell. A plate was then mounted on the top of the front wheel bearings to fit in these slots. The rear of the car is held in position by the peg that would have held the spare wheel that locates in the hole in the alloy chassis plate.
