My son and I spent most of our initial outlay on secondhand track and cars. As the hobby progressed we realized that we would like a permanent fixture in the garage. The main design parameters were best use of space and ease of deployment. After negotiations with my wife I began to design a semi-permanent fixture so that the garage could be used for the full-scale car when it is raining.
A simple 8’ x 4’ board hinged with drop down legs seemed to be the best solution for quick deployment and the track configuration is about as much as we could fit on the board.
The figures are the usual suspects, however a few are some interlopers from a Captain Scarlet cereal packet (Slightly taller that the other figures but that may because of a good diet and gene pool). Each lane is powered separately, brakes fitted and the pacer is used for solo racing.
The hills are built up polystyrene from packaging covered with paper mache then painted. Trees are either real or the railway model type. The technical area buildings are made from painted polystyrene.
The track is extended regularly when my friends come round of an evening of drink driving. The track has also featured at the local school fete to raise funds for the PTA. Next year I’ll use some of my cheaper cars!!
An old laptop is used for timing and the screensaver shows racing scenes to keep the spectators entertained.
