“Oakhills Motorsports Park” is a 43’ Scalextric Sport Track. Timing is done with an IBM Thinkpad, which runs “VRS Lite” software.
The lightweight construction and portability of the track is important. The track is in our mostly empty but not unused living room. Planning the track I wanted something I could set up, tear down and move around myself, quickly (my wife is disabled… unable to help me). The surface is Cellotex, a lightweight cello foam insulating board that is face with foil. The Cellotex was framed with 1”x 6” boards. I used indoor/outdoor carpet for the surface.
The track is held on with industrial Velcro. I’ve had to take the track down at least a dozen times over the past year. This can be done in less than½ an hour (most of the time is spent putting the decorative stuff and cars on the track away). The track has stood up to the “abuse” of moving it around quite well.
I wanted a two level track so I could incorporate a tight downhill section similar to the “Keyhole at Laguna Seca”. This has also given me a place to decorate. The walls by the down-hill sections are from the adventure game“ Mage Knight”. These come pre-painted. I cut down one wall section to construct retaining walls for the overpass, which were cast in resin. I’m still in the process of “peopling” the track.
The fastest lap so far (3.799 secs) has been turned by a modified Ninco BMW MR3 anglewinder.
