It all started with a Scalextric box set bought for my son one Christmas. Now four years on it has led to a permanent 18 metre track in the attic which has taken over a year to build. The track has been raised to ensure that the scenery and track are not trodden on and for easier access to the cars should they come off, which they often do!
The grass sections are the same depth as the track to add realism. This has been achieved with polystyrene ceiling tiles cut to shape around the track, glued into position and then covered with grass sheets. The pitstop tarmac is also ceiling tiles flat side up painted black. I’ve used Scalextric, MRRC and SRA figures and buildings with the latter being the most up to date. The SRA figures are also the most detailed and although supplied unpainted, once painted and decals added look really great. To ensure that the decals stick use watered down PVA glue on the area where you intend sticking them, this will help them adhere to the figure better.
The pitstop buildings have had lights fitted to show the detail inside. The grandstands and control tower have been sprayed grey and silver to look more realistic rather than the original red and yellow. All the buildings have had clear plastic added to their windows to look like glass which I’ve cut from boxes of items purchased from the high street.
