Track Design Competition: Kevin Saunders

This is a 4 lane home loft circuit, in a space 24 feet long by just over 4 feet wide. In the middle of this space we have roof rafters every 2 feet, so coming up with something interesting has been a challenge. We’ve settled on a long straight (18 feet) with some bends going between and around the rafters on the other side of the circuit.

To liven things up we’ve tried to recreate as realistic a pit lane as possible. We now have a 12 foot pit lane with working turn-in and turn-out lanes. This was achieved by modifying some old curves to fit the standard scalextric pit entry and exits. The pit lane has its own power from power extension leads and a separate turn in (an old Le Mans start) to the pit lane provides a home and starting point for the safety car.

Pit buildings are modified scalextric grandstands, with seating areas above. Cutting up grandstands sounds a bit drastic but it works quite well, as you can see “inside” the buildings, and you get a bonus of open seated areas with what’s left.

The kids (both girls) are both proficient drivers and my wife is still regretting buying me a scalextric set as a joke last year……….
