Track Design Competition: Michael & Erik Moellegaard

Just two years ago we bought a Le Mans 24hr Scalextric set including two Mercedes CLKs and a 10-metres track. All we actually wanted at that time was to occasionally enjoy father-son races on the living room floor. Today however, we have a 22-metres permanent Scalextric track, more than 50 cars from various manufacturers and almost weekly father-son grand prix tournaments.

We soon realised that slot-racing was the perfect way to combine our interest in motor sports and creativity plus the possibility of sharing an ongoing hobby.

We decided to make a permanent track and started working on the track layout. We discussed the demands and agreed on a layout that didn't take up much space, but still gave us a relatively long track that wasn't too easy nor too hard to race on. Also we wanted streetlights along the track so that we would be able to "race at night", and finally we wanted to add as much realism to the track as possible.

We surfed the Internet to see other track layouts and combined these with our own ideas. We decided to make all the bridges and levels with precisely cut chipboard. The land and rocks were created from a homemade compound of glue and sawdust which was later painted with life-like colours. Afterwards all the accessories were added.

Although the track appears finished, it's not. It will always be subject to rebuilding and enlargements inspired by new ideas.
