Track Design Competition: Ray Clemens

The track loyaout: Constructed of Scalextric classic track. I have deliberately made the circuit undulated and cambered, making every section interesting to look at and drive. The elevation and modelling are formed using basic carpentry and modelling techniques utilising chipboard and hardboard covered with grass sheet or painted.

The cliff face below the "NGK" corner is constructed with Grotten Rock, a light exfoliated clay rock sold for aquarium decoration; expanding foam, sold for sealing around newly installed window and door frames; Polyfilla and paint.

Other elevations have been formed using chicken wire coated with kitchen towel soaked in runny Polyfilla. Buildings, which are MRRC and Classic Scalextric, are modified using a Commo drill with abrasive cutting wheels. Eg. the building within the "loop" section of track is constructed from two bottom sections of control tower C642 adapted and topped with an MRRC grandstand.

The Pit Lane: To construct my working pit lane I used the straight and curved chicane extensions and one chicane section. The access and exit junctions are formed by inserting the inside lane of inner curve C156 into the straight track. The track pieces were cut with stanley knife and Commo drill and super glued together, filled and painted. The rail contact is maintained using wire soldered underneath the track. The access junction is operated manually by push rods constructed from flat plastic with shaped pieces of oak wood superglued to them to direct the cars straight on or turning down the pit lane.
