I was very happy to support Sean with this Christmas competition. I am of the opinion that the cars produced today deserve a fitting setting and believe that there is even more to be gained from the hobby by attempting to recreate interesting layouts. I hope that the television series ‘Short Circuits’ has helped to show that a circuit can be built to look good without spending too much money and that the buildings, figures and scenics are available nowadays to make a circuit look exciting. If we can all encourage each other to exchange ideas then the hobby can only benefit.

I was a little worried as the competition got off to a slow start. I need not have worried! Thanks to you all for contributing. I am always on the look out for potential products to create. SRA was created because I wanted figures etc for my home and club circuits. I can honestly say that I have been motivated by what I have seen and realise that there is still a need for more diverse items to cover Rally & GT circuits. I am currently working on Tyre walls (as painting Polo mints can be a little tiresome) and a small TV camera tower as a special for Pendle Slot Racing.

I realise I am a little behind schedule in judging the competition but I honestly found it very hard to choose. My main criterion was based on creativity, realism and inventiveness. I know some of you supplied varying degrees of standards in terms of picture quality but I did look beyond that. I also over looked the bending of the rules regarding quantity of pictures, as a professional model maker I know how much time and effort goes into any project. I am a firm believer that you should work to satisfy yourself first and if others admire your work it’s a bonus. I selected the top three on the grounds that they had all developed the landscaping around the track. Having created the groundwork each then enhanced this work by adding trees and other home made track accessories, mostly scratch built. This adds colour and produces a truly three-dimensional scene. The addition of dioramas around the track added interest and told a story. This could be a workman’s party or crashed car. The addition of lighting is a great aid to driving as well as making the track look good. The latest Fly cars with lights are superb to race in the dark, its very exciting. Yves Lambert has the knack of doing the right amount and not overcrowding the whole thing. One or two of his pictures make you look twice they are so realistic. Yves is inspired by Le Mans and I believe he did an awesome job. Kevin made a rally track look believable with some very clever use of materials to blend the track into the landscape and some very clever original work to produce a unique track that also looks a challenge to drive around. Will took a circuit that most people could produce and gave it that extra, mainly through the use of groundwork and making everything blend in. He stamped his own personality onto the circuit and the result is a great looking layout.

Well done to everyone and congratulations to the top three. I hope everyone has a great Christmas and a very happy New Year. Next year looks certain to be very exciting with some eagerly awaited cars. Now, back to work on those tyre walls…..Jon Sword of SRA

I would like to add my thanks to all the entries that have made this competition very special. I would also like to thank Jon for his very generous support of the competition and I look forward to seeing his new additions to the Slot Racing Accessories range next year.

I hope you all have a Very Merry Xmas and look forward to an exiting New Year.
Sean.
