History

Designed in 1937 the Alfa Romeo 158 car known as Alfetta, had an unusual longevity because the car races were stopped during the years of the world and later. With the return of the competitions, in 1947, an international regulation was established whose superior category was called Formula 1. During 1947, 48 and 49 the Alfetta were still very valuable and overwhelmingly won most of the races, although it is true that their biggest rivals of yesteryear, Auto Union and Mercedes, were no longer on track.

In 1950 the Formula 1 World Championship was created. The Alfetta took part with the team of three F: Fangio, Farina and Fagioli, dominating the season. Of the 6 scoring races they won 6, resulting in Giuseppe Farina the first World Champion.

1951 was no longer such an overwhelming season despite the fact that the new evolution of the Alfetta, type 159, exceeded by almost 100 hp the previous one, but its greater weight, consumption and above all the appearance of the fast Ferrari 375 ended with the unbeaten the Alfa, alternating victories.

This left the resolution of the championship for the last race of the championship: the Great Prize of Spain in the circuit of Pedralbes. The victory here was for Fangio, who won the first of many World Championships and saved the honor of the brand. It was the last Grand Prix won by an Alfetta, because the International Automobile Federation decreed for 1952 that the World Championship would be reserved for Formula 2 cars, with the idea of making it accessible to new car brands.

Alfa Romeo had fulfilled its objective to prestige its brand and without interest to develop a new model from scratch, decided to withdraw from the competition. Thus the history of the fabulous Alfetta 159 and 159 came to an end, ending at the Alfa Romeo museum in Milan, where you can still admire them today.
