Being at the top of the competition of sports cars, Aston Martin decided in 1956 to manufacture a single-seater of Formula 1. For its development started from the engine of the DB3S Sport, 6 cylinders in line, but reduced from 3.7 to 2.5 liters , declaring 280cv. At 7,500rpm.
The chassis was built in steel tube and aluminum body, the result being a compact car or slender lines. But the realization of the DBR4 was subject to continuous delays due to the priority of David Brown, head of Aston Martin, in the development of Sport and endurance cars where the successes were happening for the British brand.
Finally the Aston Martin DBR4 made its debut in April 1959 with riders Roy Salvadori and Carroll Shelby in the Silverstone International Trophy.
In the test Salvadori's car fought in the lead and made seconds, having marked the fast lap. While the American driver, Carroll Shelby was sixth, despite a breakdown. After the promising start of the DBR4 nothing predicted his short life.
The long waiting period since its gestation and a change in the regulation of the F1 for the new decade of the 60 with a reduction of displacement to 1.5 liters, determined its future. All the cars from then on would be different and there would be no place in F1 for the large and heavy 2.5-liter cars of the front engine. Too late for the Aston Martin DBR4 / 250.
