Vanwall, the iconic English F1 car brand, was created by restless industrialist Tony Vandervell in the early 1950s. His first cars, the Thinwall Special, were modified Ferrari - painted in English green, of course - and later cars of its own construction.
In 1955 with the new rules for F1, Vandervell undertakes a new project counting on the young engineers Colin Chapman and Frank Costin for the design of chassis and bodywork. Coming from Norton, Leo Kusmicki took care of designing and manufacturing the 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine in line with direct injection.
The result was a remarkable and aerodynamic racing car with a powerful 185 HP engine able to beat the best cars of the moment. In 1956 came the first important victory: Stirling Moss won the Silvestone International Thophy. Moss together with Mike Hawthorn, Tony Brooks, Harry Schell and Stuars Lewis-Evans among others, began a promising stage for the brand with a machine at the technological forefront of its time, designed and manufactured entirely in Britain.
In 1957 Moss marks a new milestone with Vanwall and wins the English Grand Prix at Sintree, being an English driver and machine for the first time in modern F1. During 1958 Vanwall achieved success, winning many Grand Prix victories and deservedly winning the first Constructors World Championship.
After almost a decade of hard work defending the English colors, the Vanwall team's final rushed due to Tony's health problems. Vandervell, leaving the competition at its best moment of glory.
