History

For the 1938 3ltr Formula Mercedes produced the W154 with 12 cylinder engines. For 1939 the W154 was updated with 2 stage supercharging (a small compressor feeding a larger compressor and the total boost then applied to the engine) giving 480 bhp. The car was re-bodied and designated W154/M163 which is the subject of this kit. The car was capable of 195mph and consumed fuel at the rate of a gallon per mile and fuel accounted for a quarter of the cars total weight. The 1.5 ltr V8 supercharged cars built as Voiturettes for Tripoli 1939 looked like the W154/M163 but were designated W165. Indianapolis 1947/48 following WWII a liberated W154/M163 ran twice at the brickyard driven by Chet Miller.
